Neuroprolotherapy

Neuroprolotherapy uses superficial injections of a glucose solution around painful nerve tissue. Dr. Rick Verjans first assesses the origin of your pain and whether this approach fits your care plan.

When may it be discussed?

It may be discussed for certain local pain problems, for example around a skin scar. Shin pain or pain around a tendon has several possible causes, so examination comes before treatment choice.

Procedure

The painful area is marked and the skin disinfected. Several small injections follow, with ultrasound guidance where needed. More than one session may be considered; number and intervals are agreed individually.

Review and side effects

The doctor discusses potential benefits, uncertainties and alternatives. Pain relief is not guaranteed. The effect is reviewed after an agreed period.

Temporary local pain or bruising may occur. Report blood thinners and other medication and discuss suitable pain relief. Contact a doctor for increasing redness, warmth, swelling or fever.

How strong is the evidence?

Research into glucose injections covers different conditions and techniques. For example, a randomised trial studied ultrasound-guided injections around the nerve for mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome, a specific nerve entrapment at the wrist.

Those findings cannot directly be applied to superficial injections for a painful scar, shin pain or every other local pain problem. Before treatment, discuss which evidence applies to your diagnosis, the uncertainty and the alternatives. Agree when to review the effect; if benefit is insufficient, reconsider the plan.
