Ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections

Dr. Rick Verjans uses musculoskeletal ultrasound to assess muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. It can help diagnose a sports injury or persistent tendon problem and inform treatment.

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound produces images using sound waves. A probe is moved over the skin with gel. Images are available immediately and can also be viewed during movement. No X-ray radiation is used.

What can it show?

Depending on the location and clinical question, ultrasound can assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, nerves and fluid. Not all structures are clearly visible. For some symptoms, an X-ray or MRI is more suitable.

What is an ultrasound-guided injection?

The doctor uses the ultrasound image to guide the needle to the intended area. This helps placement, but does not guarantee a treatment result or remove injection risks.

Interpreting images in context

Imaging is always interpreted alongside symptoms and examination. The PROFE study on pubic symphysis X-ray findings also found changes in athletes without groin pain. This was an X-ray study, not research into ultrasound accuracy or injection outcomes.
