Foot and ankle pain

Foot or ankle pain may start after a sprain, repeated loading or without a clear accident. Dr Rick Verjans assesses athletes and non-athletes and discusses how to return to activity.

Sprained, twisted or repeatedly unstable ankle?

An ankle sprain may cause pain, swelling and difficulty bearing weight. The ligaments may be stretched or torn. Persistent pain or repeated giving way deserves assessment: not every painful ankle has only a ligament injury.

Foot, Achilles tendon or heel pain

The location, onset and activities that trigger pain guide the assessment. Read more about Achilles tendon pain behind the ankle and heel pain and plantar fasciitis under the foot, often described as a heel spur.

Assessment and treatment

A consultation includes your history and a physical examination. Ultrasound or other imaging may be appropriate. A suspected fracture needs suitable assessment; ultrasound alone does not exclude every bone injury.

Treatment may include adjusting activity, physiotherapy, strength and balance exercises and temporary support with a brace or tape. Return to work, walking or sport depends on the injury and your recovery.

Dr Verjans does not perform operations. If a surgical opinion may be helpful, he discusses the problem with an experienced surgeon and refers appropriately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play sport with an ankle sprain?

Pain, swelling, stability and restored function guide a gradual return. The number of days since injury is not enough to decide whether the ankle is ready.

When should I seek prompt medical care?

After an injury, seek prompt advice if you cannot bear weight, the ankle looks deformed or the foot becomes cold or numb. Increasing pain, marked swelling or fever also needs assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment with these symptoms.

Where can I book?

Consultations are available in Ghent, Mater near Oudenaarde and Orthoca Antwerp. Bring previous investigations and your medication list.
