Achilles tendon pain and injury

Pain and stiffness above the heel can limit running, jumping or walking. Dr. Rick Verjans assesses Achilles tendon problems in athletes and non-athletes.

Symptoms

An insertional tendon problem differs from a problem in its midportion. Long-standing Achilles symptoms are not always a typical inflammation.

Examination

The consultation reviews symptom progression and training load, followed by examination of the calf, ankle and foot. Ultrasound may add useful information, but an ultrasound finding alone is not a diagnosis.

Recovery and return to activity

Recovery may involve adapting activity, progressive strength training and physiotherapy. Return to sport is gradual and based on symptoms and function. Recovery time varies.

When should I seek medical help?

Seek prompt assessment for sudden severe pain with a snapping sensation or inability to stand on tiptoe. If unsure about urgency, contact your general practitioner or emergency service.
