Heel pain and plantar fasciitis
Pain beneath the heel often occurs where the plantar fascia attaches. “Plantar fasciitis” and “heel spur” are commonly used terms, but do not mean exactly the same thing.
Symptoms
- Pain on the first steps after sleeping or sitting.
- Tenderness beneath the heel.
- Worsening with prolonged standing, walking or running.
A heel spur visible on an X-ray is not necessarily the cause of pain. Other structures can also cause heel pain.
Examination
The doctor assesses pain location, foot and calf function and daily loading. Ultrasound sometimes adds information. Imaging is not necessary for everyone.
Recovery and return to activity
Care may include adapting activity, suitable footwear and targeted foot and calf exercises, coordinated with a physiotherapist or other professional where needed. Recovery time varies.
When should I seek medical help?
Seek assessment for severe pain after an accident, inability to bear weight, numbness or worsening pain at rest.
