Shin splints and shin pain (MTSS)
Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), causes pain along the inner shin. Symptoms often develop with repetitive running or jumping loads.
Symptoms
- Pain along a longer section of the tibial border.
- Symptoms during or after running and jumping.
- Worsening after a change in training volume or intensity.
Examination
Not all shin pain is MTSS. A bone stress injury or another lower-leg problem can also cause pain. The doctor assesses its precise location, progression and activity load. Imaging is sometimes needed.
Recovery and return to activity
The plan addresses the balance between loading and recovery. It may include temporary training changes, strengthening and gradual running progression. The response both during and after activity matters.
When should I seek medical help?
Have pronounced focal bone pain, pain at rest or difficulty walking normally assessed. Seek immediate medical help for sudden severe pain with a tense lower leg or numbness.
