Hamstring injury

Book an appointmentPractical information

A hamstring injury may occur suddenly during sprinting or a large stretching movement. Tendon problems high at the back of the thigh can also develop gradually.

Symptoms

Examination

The doctor assesses how the injury happened, pain location and muscle function. Ultrasound or MRI may answer a specific question, but is not automatically needed for every injury.

Recovery and return to activity

For an acute injury, stop the provoking sport activity and have its severity assessed. Rehabilitation gradually rebuilds strength, movement and sport-specific loads. Return to sprinting or competition depends on function and recovery, not only the number of weeks elapsed.

When should I seek medical help?

Seek prompt assessment for major weakness, extensive bruising or severe pain high near the buttock after an accident, especially if walking is difficult.
