Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow causes pain on the outside of the elbow, for example when gripping, lifting or extending the wrist. It also occurs in people who do not play tennis.
Symptoms
- Pain when lifting a bag or shaking hands.
- Tenderness on the outside of the elbow.
- Reduced strength because of pain during everyday activities.
Examination
The doctor examines the elbow and discusses demands from work, sport and daily life. Not all elbow pain is tennis elbow. Further tests such as ultrasound may be needed if the diagnosis is uncertain.
Recovery and return to activity
The plan may include adapting provoking activities and gradually strengthening the forearm, with physiotherapy where appropriate. Recovery often takes time; a fixed timescale cannot be predicted.
When should I seek medical help?
Seek medical assessment for symptoms after a fall, marked swelling, numbness or significant weakness. Also discuss persistent or worsening pain.
