Runner’s knee and kneecap pain
“Runner’s knee” is used for different problems. Pain around the kneecap differs from pain on the outside of the knee. A focused examination helps distinguish them.
Symptoms
- Around or behind the kneecap, for example on stairs, squatting or prolonged sitting.
- On the outside of the knee, for example during repeated bending while running.
These symptoms do not automatically indicate cartilage damage or a meniscus injury.
Examination
The doctor discusses training load and examines the knee, strength and movement. Imaging is not needed for everyone; it depends on symptom progression and examination findings.
Recovery and return to activity
Adapted training and targeted exercise therapy may form part of the plan. Strength, load tolerance and gradual return to running are addressed according to the identified cause.
When should I seek medical help?
A knee that locks after an accident, swells markedly or cannot bear weight needs prompt assessment.
