Jumper’s knee and patellar tendon pain

Book an appointmentPractical information

Jumper’s knee affects the patellar tendon, usually just below the kneecap. Pain often increases with jumping, acceleration or other substantial loads.

Symptoms

Examination

The doctor assesses pain location and how the knee responds to load. Kneecap pain and other knee problems can cause similar symptoms. Ultrasound sometimes complements examination.

Recovery and return to activity

Load adjustment and gradual strength building often form the basis of recovery. With a physiotherapist, jumping and sporting activity can resume progressively. Rest alone does not always provide a lasting solution.

When should I seek medical help?

Seek prompt assessment for sudden severe pain, major swelling or inability to actively straighten the knee.
