Biodex strength testing in Gentbrugge
An isokinetic Biodex test measures thigh muscle strength. With Dr. Rick Verjans, this test takes place at Maria Middelares in Gentbrugge.
What does it measure?
At a set movement speed, muscle groups with opposing functions are tested, such as the quadriceps and hamstrings around the knee. The measurements describe strength and possible differences between muscle groups or legs.
When can it be useful?
- Pain around the kneecap.
- Recovery from a quadriceps or hamstring injury.
- Certain tendon problems around the knee.
- As part of return-to-sport assessment, for example after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
How are results used?
Results can help adjust rehabilitation. Strength is one part of a return-to-sport decision; symptoms, function and sporting goals also matter. Where appropriate, Biodex may also be used alongside sports physiotherapy.
Research background
Dr. Verjans contributed to the PROFE study of hip strength and range of motion in professional female football players. Its measurement setup differs and does not provide directly applicable knee Biodex reference values. Results need comparison with an appropriate test method and patient group.
Common questions
Does the test alone decide whether I can return to sport?
No. It helps assess strength and differences, but symptoms, recovery, functional tests and your sport’s demands also matter.
What should I bring?
Bring sportswear, your medication list and relevant surgery or rehabilitation reports. Mention pain or limitations in advance and ask about preparation and price.
