Arthrosamid for knee osteoarthritis
Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable hydrogel injected into the knee joint in adults with symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. This page provides general product information, not individual treatment advice.
What is Arthrosamid?
The gel consists of water and polyacrylamide and remains in the joint. Treatment aims to reduce pain and improve function.
Arthrosamid does not cure osteoarthritis or replace lost cartilage. The effect and its duration vary between people.
Procedure
The injection is given with local anaesthesia. The treatment protocol requires preventive antibiotics; the treating doctor determines the regimen.
Preparation, medication and aftercare are discussed in advance. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own.
Research and uncertainties
Follow-up studies describe sustained reductions in pain and limitations in some participants. The three-year extension did not maintain a comparison group; the five-year study was small and had no control group.
These results do not guarantee years of benefit, cartilage restoration or avoidance of surgery.
Side effects and aftercare
Pain and swelling may occur and can sometimes persist. Joint infection is a possible serious complication.
Seek same-day medical advice for increasing severe pain, a hot or red and markedly swollen knee, fever or feeling unwell. Follow the individual instructions on activity and return to sport.
Practical information
Total costs and practical arrangements are discussed before treatment. Read the practical information or the manufacturer’s product and safety information.
